Three Amigos
There is a trail that runs on the east side of the Yellowstone River between Fishing Bridge and Lehardy's Rapids...part of the old Howard Eaton Trail. As with most trails in the park, once you've traveled a few hundred yards you experience a very different Yellowstone than that found on the roads and boardwalks...you pretty much have the place to yourself. On this particular hike (about 6 miles round trip), we encountered only bison and elk on our journey. The trail hugs the Yellowstone River for the first half-mile or so. On this stretch, waterfowl are abundant. I watched these three White Pelicans ( the "Three Amigos") go about their morning feeding. What caught my eye was the synchronous behavior of the birds...the lead bird would initiate a dive and all three would execute simultaneously. This is the first of two pictures...see the next picture in the album, also. They can also be purchased as a pair at a discount...see the "combo" listing in the album. Image size is 10.2" x 16.3" on a 16" x 20" mat and backer.
